In the framework of MARE Asia, Prof. Chris Zevenbergen and Dr. Riyanti Djalanta gave public lectures at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari. Over 150 students attended, as well as Faculty and PhD candidates, on their free Saturday.
Prof. Zevenbergen presented a wealth of international examples from the Netherlands, South Korea, Japan and Australia. He related these to the MARE Asia work on the priority areas in Kendari. This led to a lively discussion on the barriers and opportunities for Kendari. Funding, leadership, public awareness and capacities amongst others. ¨I want to improve my city and apply your examples when and where opportune¨, said one student. The new generation is getting ready.
Dr. Riyanti Djelanta further engaged the students with her lecture on disaster management. She presented UNISDR’s progress on the Hyogo Framework for Action and the lessons for Kendari and Indonesia. She inspired the students: ¨you can make a difference¨.
MARE Asia foresees more public lectures, such as at Halu Oleo University. Already 4 student representatives from different years spend an evening session with prof. Chris Zevenbergen, Dr. Riyanti Djalanti, Dr. Sebastiaan van Herk and Dikman Maheng. They discussed flood resilience urban planning and construction.
